The name Sordevolo is said to come from the Latin surdabulus, a spring, or from super Elvum, above the Elvo, the stream that rises on Monte Mars. The village appears in a document of 827, under the bishops of Vercelli, and from 1574 until Napoleon it governed itself by its own statutes.
In the eighteenth century the Bruco and Ambrosetti turned to fine cloth, and backed by the Monte di Pietà the village made at least 70% of the Savoy army's clothing. To house the weavers a five-storey building went up at a thousand metres; it came to shelter Trappist monks fleeing France, and the Trappa now belongs to the Ecomuseo del Biellese.
