Portula

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,365 · Postal code: 13833

Portula is named after a door: the village stands at the crossing point between two valleys, the Valsessera and the Triverese, and the coat of arms confirms it, with a door drawn on the shield. The comune did not grow by itself. It was set up on 24 October 1627 by a foundation treaty signed by Carlo Emanuele of Savoy, and the parish followed a year later, on 10 October 1628.

The southern, more populated side lies under the Rossiglione knoll, crowned by its sanctuary: an octagon of stone and brick, with an arcaded porch on brick columns and a lantern on top. To the north the ground climbs into the upper Valsessera.
