Mezzana Mortigliengo

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 561 · Postal code: 13831

A local legend explains Mortigliengo with a battle said to have left many dead; the name appears in documents only around the year one thousand, in a diploma of emperor Otto III, while Mezzana marks its middle position. It was one of five cantons of the Mortigliengo, split into separate comuni in 1627.

The houses lie scattered. The parish church of San Bartolomeo, rebuilt in the seventeenth century, keeps a far older Romanesque bell tower, and the fresco of Saint Christopher from the tower now hangs indoors. At Mino an old house of stone piers and wooden galleries, under a deep overhanging roof, holds the Mortigliengo workshop museum, where walnut oil is pressed and apple vinegar made.
