Blessed Peter the Levite, patron of the land of the Gold and Stone Museum
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of May
Salussola celebrates Blessed Peter the Levite on the first Sunday of May, in the chapel dedicated to him.
The name is thought to come from a Lombard diminutive of sala, through a chain of forms — salucula, salutiolam, salussula — that points to a small manorial curtis of about the seventh century, around which the village gathered. Under Rome, Salussola was a fortified outpost guarding the gold washed out of the Elvo and Olobbia streams, at the edge of the Bessa; once the seams ran dry, the place lost part of its weight. A museum of gold and stone still tells that trade.
One gate of the medieval wall survives, the lower porta urbica, raised between 1374 and 1375. At dawn on 9 March 1945 twenty partisans were shot here in reprisal, after torture; a stele remembers them.
