Zimone

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 425 · Postal code: 13887

Zimone sits on the south-eastern crest of the Serra, at the Canavese edge. It has no hamlets, bar Sette Fontane, named from seven old wells on the Bertignano lake road. The name may come from dialect sumon, the linked inner courtyards of houses, or cimon, the hilltop.

The parish church of San Giorgio was finished in 1728 without its facade; the ochre front between stone columns came in 1820; the tower beside it, halted short of plan, rose only in the twentieth century. At San Rocco, now an ecomuseum of carts and cartwrights, no tower came: money ran short; the bell was housed on a corner of the facade, safe from thieves.
