Roppolo

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 921 · Postal code: 13883

Roppolo is the easternmost comune of the Canavese, on the last hills of the Ivrea moraine ridge. Its land runs down to the shores of Lake Viverone, though the water itself is not its own. Erbaluce, the Canavese vine, also reaches its eastern limit here; the vines have since given way to kiwi.

On the hilltop, where the Romans had a stronghold, the counts Bicchieri of Vercelli rebuilt the fortification as a castle in 1225: the brick keep and the row of corbels under the eaves are still in place. Since the mid-twentieth century it has housed a museum of wine and farming and is privately owned; the Via Francigena passed below.
