Sandigliano

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,762 · Postal code: 13876

The castle of the Torrione, built around its tower between the thirteenth and the fifteenth century, housed the Holy Shroud while it was being carried from Chambéry into Piedmont. In the inner courtyard there are wall paintings showing the Shroud itself.

The name is recorded in 999 as Santilianus and probably comes from a Roman family name. The town has changed province twice in little more than a century: it was under Novara, passed to Vercelli in 1927 and since 1992 belongs to Biella. In the centre stands the castle of La Rocchetta, which keeps its outer walls and its tower but no longer the ricetto, the little houses where people took shelter.
