Borriana lies mostly in the plain on the left bank of the Elvo, its hamlets scattered around the centre; beyond the stream the comune owns a strip of the Bessa plateau. The name, also recorded as Borrigania and Burriana, may come from borri, boggy ground where water stands still.
The village is first named in a charter of the Eusebian church in 1150, but the site was frequented much earlier: near the Oremo, at Chiesa Vecchia, a Roman necropolis came to light, and digs on the Bessa identified Roman settlements between 150 and 90 BC. The parish church of San Sulpizio is in bare brick, with its pediment and two orders of pilasters.
