Candelo

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 7,952 · Postal code: 13878

Candelo is known above all for one thing: the ricetto, the fortified medieval structure where the community kept its goods safe. It is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and the historic centre lies around it.

The rest of the territory is the Baraggia, part of the Baragge nature reserve; there too lies the site of Ysangarda, where between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries a village and the fortifications of the Vialardi family stood. During the war Candelo was a place of free internment: two German Jews lived here under forced residence and managed to escape capture and deportation until the Liberation.
