Feast of Santa Maria Assunta and San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 15 and 16 August
On 15 and 16 August Viverone, a municipality of 1,423 inhabitants in the province of Biella, celebrates its patrons Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of Mary) and San Rocco.
Viverone lies on the Biella shore of its namesake lake, the third largest in Piedmont. Under that water a pile-dwelling settlement was found, added in 2011 to the world heritage list. From the nearby lake of Bertignano two canoes hollowed from one trunk were recovered, in 1912 and in 1982. Old documents give the lake another name, San Martino, after a Benedictine outpost long gone.
On the hill to the east a small twelfth-century church of Saint Michael was enlarged into a convent and called Cella San Marco, then San Michele again, finally Cella Grande. Its stone bell tower, with paired windows and small arches under the roof, still rises above the houses.
