Worked flints and bronze mooring rings show that people here lived in pile dwellings, as at Piverone and Viverone; since 2011 those sites have been World Heritage. The village lay on the line between Vercelli and Ivrea, and Vercelli, to strengthen its hold, moved the settlement and the castle from the place called Villa to a new site, Borgo Franco.

Below the castle stands the parish church of San Martino, designed in 1784 by Filippo Castelli: a wide neoclassical front, four columns and a carved pediment, the white and red bell tower behind the roof. For generations the village made chairs: wooden frames by the men, seats woven by the women from marsh grass.
