Settimo Rottaro

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 503 · Postal code: 10010

Settimo Rottaro sits on the eastern edge of the Canavese, near Lake Viverone. Rottaro may come from rubetum, the old name of a bramble-covered rise; other readings circulate, and one, the cart wheels of a place of transit, reached the coat of arms: three gold six-spoked wheels beside the number seven in Roman figures. Before 1227 the village leaves no written trace.

The patron is Saint Bononio, Bolognese abbot of Lucedio, whom legend credits with defeating a dragon risen from the lake. The parish church was begun in 1787 to a design by Carlo Andrea Rana, where the saint withdrew to pray in the eleventh century; above the doorway, the Madonna and Child with saints.
