Magnano

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 378 · Postal code: 13887

The name Magnano may come from the Latin magnus-anus, perhaps an estate name, or from manianus, the medieval craftsmen who made the iron handles here for the diocese of Vercelli. The village follows the ridge of the Serra d'Ivrea, its land scattered into farmsteads like San Sudario.

Held from the eleventh century by the chapter of Sant'Eusebio in Vercelli, Magnano fortified itself in 1204 to break away as a free borough: the houses climbed to a ricetto, still entered through its gate-tower. Its arms bear a golden tower with Ghibelline merlons and a black eagle. At Bose, by the Romanesque church of San Secondo, Enzo Bianchi founded a monastic community in 1965.
