Cerretto Langhe

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 455 · Postal code: 12050

The arms of Cerretto Langhe carry two Turkey oaks, rooted on a green plain against a field the blazon calls sky blue. The same tree turns up in the Latin names Cerretum and in loco Cerrae: oak grew thick here. In the Middle Ages the village had a strong castle with four towers, held by the Carretto of Gorzegno.

The parish church stands above a dry-stone wall, higher than the houses. Its pink-plastered front is ribbed with bare brick, pointed arches, pinnacles and a rose window of coloured glass, while the stone bell tower behind, with its clock, speaks another language. The sanctuary of the Madonna is at Cerretta.
