Serravalle Langhe lies in the Alta Langa and was one of the «università», the communities that made up the marquisate of Gorzegno, a Del Carretto fief recognised until the eighteenth century as an imperial one. The village is named in the investiture Emperor Charles IV granted on 2 February 1354 to the sons of Giacomo Del Carretto, confirming the family's old privileges over a string of places in the Langhe.
The marquises' palace now houses the town hall; Villa and Leprato are the hamlets. On the belvedere in via Tibaldi grows a horse chestnut listed among the monumental trees of the Piedmont Region: twenty-two metres tall, its trunk almost three metres round, municipal property and open to anyone.
