Feisoglio

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 344 · Postal code: 12050

The name of this Alta Langa village kept changing: charters call it Feixolium in 1142 and later Fauxolius, and in the sixteenth century it turns up as Farzoio in the Vatican Gallery of Maps. The etymology is still argued: some trace it to the Latin for beech, some to sheep pasture, some to a temple of Apollo.

In August 1471 the co-lords of the marquisate of Bossolasco granted statutes to Feisoglio, along with Albaretto, Bossolasco, Niella and San Benedetto. The arms carry the grazing of the past and the crop of the present: a sheep with a bell on a slope, and five hazelnuts on a red chief recalling the Aleramic March.
