On 15 August Gaiola, a municipality of 600 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of Mary).
Of Gaiola, in the Stura valley, one thing is told above all: on top of one of the mountains around it there open soffioni boraciferi, boric fumaroles, holes of varying size, the largest about two metres wide and twenty deep, breathing warm air.
In Piedmontese the village is called Gajòla, in Occitan Gaiola. The houses, with their red roofs, are gathered on the valley floor, and the wooded slopes rise at once behind them.
