Valloriate

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 121 · Postal code: 12010

Valloriate, Valàuria in Piedmontese and in Occitan, appears as Vallis aurea in a document of 1058 granting the place to the bishop of Turin; in the nineteenth century the village was still called Valloria di Cuneo. It later passed in fief to the Tesio of Cavallerleone. By the mid-nineteenth century it held some fourteen hundred people across thirty-two hamlets, living on oats, barley and rye, on a seed clover reckoned particularly fine, on cattle and goats, and on a little limestone and slate.

The arms hold the two things that mattered. In the first and fourth quarters a silver chestnut tree on red: chestnuts and timber were the village's main resource. In the second and third a red tower with Guelph merlons, recalling the marquisate of Saluzzo and echoing the sixteenth-century watchtower, partly destroyed by the Germans. The parish church of San Michele, seat of a priory, stands in the hamlet of Serre.
