Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot
📅 Every year, on 17 January
On 17 January Roccasparvera celebrates its patron Saint Anthony the Abbot, to whom the parish church is dedicated; the Castello dei Bolleris and the Porta Bolleris stand here.
Roccasparvera is named after the crag closing the mouth of the Stura valley: up there stood a castle, now a few stones, from the time when the marquises of Saluzzo held the valley against Cuneo and the Angevins. In 1305 a battle here settled the Angevin restoration. The medieval emblem was a bird over a castle; today the castle sits above two crossed swords.
The Porta Bolleris survives from the old walls, named after a fifteenth-century lord. On the square, beside the parish church of Sant'Antonio, a roofed stone fountain served as the washhouse. In March 1945 the Nazi-Fascists shot four partisans in piazza Castello: the bullet marks are still on the walls.
