Moiola

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 252 · Postal code: 12010

Moiola sits on an alluvial terrace in the Stura valley, province of Cuneo; its name comes from the Latin molliola, a wet place. The older settlement stood on the southern slope and was given up because the water reached it too often. The newer village's first parish church, St John the Baptist, is now the chapel of Sant'Anna. Between 1928 and 1946 Moiola was no comune at all: it had been merged with Gaiola.

On the road up the valley, the chapel of San Benedetto e San Membotto is all that survives of a vanished village that stood on the banks of the Stura, with a castle. It appears in a decree of the bishop of Asti of 1098 among the goods of the abbey of Saint-Théofrède at Le Puy, in Auvergne. Membotto, a Benedictine martyr, protects livestock. As village and defences declined in the fourteenth century, the church remained a devotional sanctuary.
