Valdieri

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 924 · Postal code: 12010

Valdieri lies in the Gesso valley, and until 1947 its shape was odd: the comune reached over the Po watershed to take in the Molliera valley and its two hamlets, later given to France. In 1928 it had absorbed Andonno, until then a comune of its own.

The marble quarries, bardiglio, white and cipollino, gave stone to buildings in Turin, from the Holy Spirit church to the Politecnico. The town's arms were never granted by decree: they are frescoed on the town hall, with a fleur-de-lys cross and the motto SPES UNA SALUTIS. Above the roofs rises the bell tower of San Martino, the parish church, under the rock wall.
