The hamlet of Valdinferno is said to have been named by Napoleon, who had to cross the valley in deep winter: he called it the valley of Hell, perhaps for the peat bogs he saw burning. Until the end of 2008 one single person lived there all year round, a veteran of the Russian front who had made a vow to the Madonna: if he came home alive from the war, he would never leave Valdinferno. And so it was.
In 1903 the first intercity bus line in Italy set off from here, linking Garessio to Ventimiglia. The Tanaro, for its part, has moved things: after the flood of 1744 the parish church of the Ponte was abandoned and rebuilt on the far bank, further from the river.
