Nasino

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 222 · Postal code: 17030

Near the little lake at Curagna, on the mule track to Vignolo, stands a hollow chestnut so wide that five men with their arms out cannot get round it: a painter christened it the lord of Nasino.

The village has 222 residents and its town hall in the hamlet of Costa, halfway up the Pennavaira valley below Monte Galero, 1708 metres. The caves along the stream have given up finds 9000 years old, now in Albenga; down on the valley floor there are Roman bridges and the ruins of the Del Carretto castle.

Fun facts about Nasino

The patron is Saint John the Baptist and the feast falls on 24 June, the day of his Nativity; the parish church of the main village carries his name, dates from the sixteenth century and has baroque altars with twisted columns.

Nasino grows a bean that is found nowhere else, cultivated only here. And high up, at twelve hundred metres in the place called Dente Pamparin, stand the ruins of the stone houses where in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the Ferrua family, who had come from Pamparato in the Valcasotto, gave shelter and food to travellers and made charcoal for the people of the coast.

Saint John the Baptist, patron of a contested castle

📅 Every year, on 24 June

Nasino celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June; its 16th-century church, with Baroque altars of twisted columns, is unique in the area, while the Cepollini castle was contested throughout the 14th century between the Clavesana and Del Carretto families.
