Calizzano

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 1,550 · Postal code: 17057

In the war between Genoa and the marquisate of Finale, between 1447 and 1452, Marco Del Carretto, lord of Calizzano, betrayed his own kinsman Galeotto and made a separate peace with the Republic. The punishment came: the village sacked and burned, the castle destroyed, he and his cousins in flight, and the people reduced to begging.

The village lies in the upper Val Bormida, in a basin with thirteen springs. In the Barbottina forest stands a beech nearly two hundred years old, thirty-seven metres tall, with a trunk three and a half metres across; near the Rionero wood, a chestnut five metres across and more than two hundred and fifty years old. The population is 1,550.

Our Lady of Graces and the betrayed castle

📅 Every year, on 2 July

Calizzano celebrates Our Lady of Graces on 2 July; the sanctuary dedicated to her, possibly from the 9th century, holds a frescoed Romanesque portico, while the 13th-century Del Carretto castle was destroyed after a betrayal in the 15th century.
