Viola

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 425 · Postal code: 12070

The name means “little road” and may recall a minor Roman route over the Mindino pass into Liguria; another reading makes it an oil road, the via olea, backed by the Latin form Vehola in early documents. Papers of 1142 already record Viola as an active community of the marquisate of Bonifacio del Vasto.

The Mongia, which rises under Monte Mindino, splits the village in two. On one bank stands borgo Castello, where the marks of the old stronghold survive: there, in platea castri, justice was handed down in public. On the other clings the main village and its parish church of San Giorgio, founded around 1190 and later enlarged three times.
