Mombarcaro

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 274 · Postal code: 12070

Mombarcaro is called the summit of the Langhe because, at 896 metres, it is the highest comune in that region. From the belvedere behind the houses, on the clearest days and above all after the mistral has blown, you can see the reverberation of the sea, the glare the water throws back when the sun strikes it: from that glare the name of the village, Mom-barcaro, is said to come. The same view takes in the Belbo valley, the Ligurian Apennines and the Cadibona pass, and westwards Monviso, the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.

The coat of arms says it again in two fields: above, on silver, a sailing boat with wooden hull and mast; below, on blue, two gold mountains with triangular profiles and sharp peaks. On the square behind the village, beside the war memorial, a Fiat G.91 fighter has been set up as a monument. The comune also gives its name to a potato grown throughout the upper Belbo valley and known as the Mombarcaro potato, harvested late because of the altitude.
