Torresina

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 65 · Postal code: 12070

Torresina stands on a hilltop, and its name comes from Torricella: the tower that explains it was built around 950, during the Saracen raids, and the village grew up around it. The comune was created as Torricella in 1829 and took its present name in 1892. The coat of arms holds both: a tower on one side, a ruined castle on the other.

The fief stayed with the marquises of Ceva until the seventeenth century, then passed to the Del Carretto under an unusual clause allowing inheritance through women as well as men. In April 1797 Napoleonic troops heading for the Pedaggera pass fought the Piedmontese defenders here, occupied the village and loaded it with requisitions and war taxes. The chapel of Santa Croce was built in 1844 in thanks for the end of a long famine, raised by the whole population working on feast days.
