Monterosso Grana

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 536 · Postal code: 12020

Monterosso Grana lies halfway up the Valle Grana, in the province of Cuneo. In Occitan the village is Bourgat, its people the bourgatei; in Piedmontese, Montross. Up to 900 metres the slope is chestnut wood, above it pasture, and the milk becomes Castelmagno cheese.

The arms are almost a photograph of the place: on blue, a mountain topped by castle ruins, on green ground, crossed by a wavy band. That castle, of 1286, slid away, and a stump of its tower stands on the crag; near the bridge Federico Saluzzo built another, later the house of a cadet branch of the family. A fragment of a Roman inscription is walled into the courtyard.
