Exactly 406 years of independent rule shaped Saluzzo into the formidable capital of a Piedmontese marquisate between 1142 and 1548. Its diplomatic past survives in a hillside medieval center overlooking a vast agricultural plain. This steep urban layout famously produced two major cultural figures: the patriot Silvio Pellico and the master typographer Giambattista Bodoni.
Now home to 17,224 residents, the town is a highly strategic base for alpine excursions.
