Grana

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 622 · Postal code: 14031

The name of Grana probably comes from the stream of the same name. In 1589 the duke of Mantua and Montferrat created the marquisate of Grana here, a fief carved out within Montferrat; the village was called simply Grana until 2023, when it added Monferrato to its name.

The village sits on a single hill. At the top the church spreads out, its bell tower carrying two round clock faces side by side, and a little further off a dome and a slimmer bell tower rise; from there the houses run down the slope in rows of tiled roofs, to the meadows and farms below.
