Dronero

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 7,205 · Postal code: 12025

Dronero stands at the mouth of the Valle Maira, on a rocky spur where the Maira meets the rio Roccabruna. Its origin is traced to 1150, when the villages of Ripoli and Surzana, to defend themselves from raids, withdrew onto the triangle of land between the two streams and ringed the new settlement with walls, still partly visible.

The oldest document naming it is of 1155 and calls it ad Durcolium. After the marquises of Busca it passed for four centuries to the marquisate of Saluzzo, and in 1601 to the Savoys. In 1749 Charles Emmanuel III granted it the title of city, against a payment of seventy thousand lire.
