Valgrana

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 817 · Postal code: 12020

The name of Valgrana is old, older than the Romans: grana is supposed to come from crana, a crevice, and the valley gave the rest. The first inhabitants were shepherds, and their sharp cheese was already known. Of the Saracen-age castle only ruins are left: marshal De Brissac pulled it down in 1548.

In 1431 Costanzo di Saluzzo approved the statutes of Valgrana, and the village had its own rules. In the chapel of San Bernardo, Pietro da Saluzzo painted the four evangelists on the cross vault in 1473. The church of San Martino has a wholly painted front: San Martino on horseback in the lunette and three saints in niches.
