Morozzo

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,115 · Postal code: 12040

The place changed name more than once: it was Antibo, then Morotio, and Moroty in Napoleon's time; the present Morozzo is thought to date from the Saracen raids. It grew on a bricchetto, a small hill on the bank of the Brobbio, where in Roman times there was a fort.

Of the medieval castle the church survives, reduced to the small sanctuary of the Bricchetto, which Giovanni Mazzucco frescoed in 1491 with the life of the Virgin. Just outside stands the chapel of Santo Stefano: it too had fifteenth-century frescoes, but the church served as a plague hospital and the disinfecting lime covered them.
