The name joins the diminutive of castello with the river beside it. That second half identifies this village, one of several Piedmontese namesakes, in the 1238 record calling it Castelletus Sturie. Of the castle only a few stretches of wall remain, near the chapel of Sant'Anna; the houses lie along the gravel bed of the Stura di Demonte, at 447 metres.
On the road to Morozzo, outside the village, stands the fifteenth-century chapel of San Bernardo di Mentone, rectangular in plan, with a gabled roof and front. Giovanni Mazzucco frescoed most of it around 1488, and the figures on the front remain legible under the canopy that shelters them.
