Planum Faytum, the plain of the beeches: fò is Piedmontese for beech, and the coat of arms confirms it with a tree on a green meadow, a memory of when the plateau was one single wood. Others bring in ferns, or fè, which here means a flock. Lake Pianfei, for its part, lies almost entirely in the comune of Chiusa Pesio.

The parish came before the comune. In 1583 a few families scattered across the fields obtained a church of their own, because the mother church at Villanova was too far and in winter could not be reached for the last rites. The comune itself came only in 1698, and even then an intendant noted that Pianfei formed no single body and lay scattered across the countryside.
