Rocca de' Baldi

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,698 · Postal code: 12047

The old borgo sits on a crag sheer above the Pesio: hence the first half of the name. The second points, on the most accepted hypothesis, to an Ubaldo or Robaldo of the Morozzo, said to have built the tower: hence Rupe Ubaldi, then Rocha Ubaldi, Rocham Baudorum, Roche Baudorum, until it settled as Rocca de' Baldi. It appears in a document in 1240, in a quarrel over the men of Rochebaudi.

That tower, with its Ghibelline merlons, is still the castle's visible core; the pink wing below is from 1710, by the architect Francesco Gallo. In 1865 the town hall crossed the stream to Crava, leaving castle and old borgo on the far bank.
