Feast of San Leone Magno
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of August
On the first Sunday of August Margarita, a municipality of 1,432 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron San Leone Magno.
The name comes from a twelfth-century chapel to Saint Margaret; others to the Latin margarita, pearl, or to malga, an alpine pasture. Water crosses it in several ways: the Brobbio torrent, once full of fish, the bialera di Magliano that cuts the old centre and watered the gardens, and the short Bijà, which turned the grain mills.
At the centre stands the baroque parish church of Santa Margherita, by Francesco Gallo, who designed the dome of the Vicoforte sanctuary nearby; its bell tower is 52 metres tall and Giorgio Bocca wrote about it. Just beyond, the civic tower marks the ghetto, the first nucleus, where the town hall now occupies the old schools.
