Nucetto

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 432 · Postal code: 12070

The name comes from the Latin nucetum, ground thick with walnut trees. Nucetto first appears in April 967, as Nocetum, in a diploma of Otto I issued at Ravenna. Of the castle, wrecked in 1414 by Amadeus VIII of Savoy and razed by Napoleon in 1802 with the other forts nearby, ruins remain at Villa.

On the Tanaro valley floor, beyond the bridge, stands the parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena: bare brick, a bell tower with a clock. Bartolomeo Unia, priest and architect, designed it in the late nineteenth century; inside is an organ by the Vittino brothers of Centallo. The old parish church of Saints Cosmas and Damian sits by the ruins, deconsecrated.
