Centallo

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 6,817 · Postal code: 12044

Centallo lies on the plain between the Grana stream to the west and the Stura di Demonte, which marks its eastern boundary. Of Roman origin, in Lombard times it belonged to the abbey of San Dalmazzo di Pedona; the first mention is a donation of the mid eleventh century. Contested by Cuneo, Saluzzo and the Savoys, it ended up with the Bolleri, loyal to the king of France.

In the sixteenth century, with the Franco-Spanish war, it became a strategic position: even Torquato Tasso wrote about the liberation of Centallo. What was left of the castle was destroyed in 1589. Since then it has been a farming centre, with the Cuneo bean as its typical crop and a noted tradition of organ builders.
