Bagnasco sits in a hollow of the Tanaro valley, where the roads part for Liguria over the Giovetti pass and for the Mongia valley through Battifollo. The village falls into two quarters, the Piano and the older Borgo, which holds the town hall. In 967 the emperor Otto I confirmed the fief to the marquis Aleramo; the -asco ending suggests a Ligurian origin.
Of the castle of the marquises of Ceva ruins are left on the hilltop, tied by a wall to a round tower halfway down, from which two ramparts once ran to shield the village. Higher up, at 851 metres above the Tanaro gorge, the chapel of Santa Giulitta keeps fifteenth-century frescoes.
