A place called Prieli turns up in 1033 among a Parma monastery's holdings. It is thought to be Priero, since the list sets it between Sale and Niella Tanaro, neighbouring villages. Silvestro Mazzolini was born here, probably the first theologian to attack Luther's teaching in public, and their quarrel was a long one.
The village we see was planned on paper once the Poggio hill emptied: in 1387 the marquis of Ceva and Priero's syndic signed the terms for the burgum novum, a grid arcaded along the road to Savona. Of the four corner towers only the north-eastern is whole, the Torre Maestra, cylindrical, its crown jutting on arched corbels.
