Ceva

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,757 · Postal code: 12073

The name is not certain and the guesses are many. The most credited traces it to a Ligurian tribe from Provence, the Cebates, who are said to have founded the place and called it Ceba; others tie it to a local breed of cattle, or to a pre-Indo-European word meaning enclosure and inhabited place; the last, found in a manuscript, brings in the Roman consul Junius Brutus Scaeva.

From Ceba comes the name of the townspeople, the cebani, which replaced the older cevani under fascism, to stress the place's Roman roots. Capital of an Aleramic marquisate with its own mint, Ceva lost its independence in 1296 to Asti; in 1651 it was made head of a province of forty-one towns and in 1773 it was given the title of city.
