Peveragno

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,481 · Postal code: 12016

Peveragno took the place of another village. The first was called Forfice, from the valley that forks into two narrower ones because of a spur of the Bisalta: forfex, the scissors. It stood a couple of kilometres away, and of it there remain the ruins of the castrum, part of the moat and a chapel.

The name Peveragno appears in a deed of 1299, and Forfice is named for the last time in 1356: perhaps the plague, perhaps only its awkward site. In the avenue of Remembrance every plane tree is a man fallen in the First World War, and a square carries the name of the thirty men seized and killed in reprisal on a market Monday in 1944.
