In 1759 the government of Carlo Emanuele III moved the royal glassworks to Chiusa, a firm set up in Turin on the model of the French royal manufactures. Master glassmakers came from Bohemia, Venice and Altare, and more than 230 kinds of glass were made; a selection of the finest pieces is now kept in the civic tower.
Above the village, on Monte Cavanero, stands the Mirabello castle: after the mid sixteenth century Agamennone III, lord of Chiusa, pulled down what was there to build a more modern one. Only ruins are left, from neglect and from the earthquake of 23 February 1887. On the same hill a necropolis was found, used between the eleventh and ninth centuries BC.
