Feast of Saint Lawrence
📅 Every year, on 10 August
On 10 August Saliceto, a municipality of 1,382 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron Saint Lawrence the martyr (san Lorenzo martire).
The name seems to come not from the willows of the valley floor, which are on the coat of arms, but from the Ligurian Salii. Saliceto appears as Salocetum in 967, among the sixteen courts Otto I granted to Aleramo at Ravenna. In 1639 a marksman with a fowling harquebus killed the Spanish commander from a distance; in reprisal the old castle on the hill was razed.
The parish church of San Lorenzo was built in the early sixteenth century for cardinal Carlo Domenico Del Carretto over the old pieve: its sandstone front is carved in low relief, with sirens, salamanders, a phoenix and a pelican feeding its young on its own blood.
