Feast of Maria Vergine Assunta
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Sale delle Langhe, a municipality of 525 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patroness Maria Vergine Assunta (Assumption of Mary).
Until 1948 Sale, or Sale delle Langhe, was the name of a larger territory including the Bricco; that year the hamlet broke away as its own comune, Sale San Giovanni, ending a rivalry with the valley. The name is explained in two ways: the ancient Salii who lived here, or an old word for cave, room or village.
The village belonged to the marquisate of Ceva, which gave it its own statutes in 1330. The oldest religious building is the medieval chapel of San Lazzaro, which had a small hospital, a lepers' refuge and a graveyard beside it. Some comfort came from a brick kiln, opened in 1907 and working until the eighties.
