Montezemolo

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 270 · Postal code: 12070

Montezemolo stands on the Ligurian border, at the meeting point of three Tanaro tributary valleys: the Cevetta, the Belbo and the Bormida. The main settlement is at 750 metres, and the Belbo rises here. The name comes from the Latin Mons Geminus, twin hills, for the two rises above the village; in twelfth-century documents the place appears as Montezemulus, within the marquisate of Ceva.

Part of the commune falls inside the Sorgenti del Belbo nature reserve, the only wetland of the Alta Langa, shared with Camerana and Saliceto, where 22 orchid species have been counted. In the eighteenth century the fief was bought by the Cordero of Mondovì: from this village that branch took its marquis title and the surname it still carries, Cordero di Montezemolo.
