Verzuolo is the lowest-lying town of the Valle Varaita, about twenty-five kilometres north of Cuneo. The name first appears in the donation the marchioness Adelaide made to the monastery of San Pietro in Turin on 8 October 1068; the castle is recorded from 1087, and in 1159 a privilege of Frederick Barbarossa names the court of Verzuolo with its castle, towers and district.
On 15 May 1602 Michele Antonio Saluzzo della Manta was invested by Charles Emmanuel I as first count of Verzuolo: the line died out in 1849. Meanwhile the people were moving down from the hill to the plain. Textiles came in the nineteenth century, and in 1905 Luigi Burgo founded here the paper mills that bear his name.
