Borgo Ticino

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,929 · Postal code: 28040

The town began as Borgo Franco: Novara built it before 1190, on the hill above the older fortified centre of Lupiate, and built it against someone, the local lords of the da Castello family. In the nineteenth century it headed a district of eight surrounding centres, with its own court and royal customs office.

On 13 August 1944 Nazi-fascist troops killed twelve young men in reprisal, then looted and burned many houses. The main square carries the name of the twelve martyrs; one of those responsible was sentenced to life by the military court of Verona in 2012.
