Agrate Conturbia

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,554 · Postal code: 28010

The comune holds together two villages on the low hills south of Lake Maggiore, Agrate and Conturbia, each with its own castle. The old name, Agredade, is traced to the Roman personal name Acrius with the suffix -atum; others prefer agr-et-atum, place of fields. The royal court later passed to the canons of San Giulio, a gift of the emperor Otto I.

At Agrate stands the baptistery, the chief building here. The lower part, circular, is usually dated to about 930 and rests on the foundations of an earlier building, probably a small Roman shrine; the octagonal drum above, of squared stones with hanging arches in threes to a side and narrow double-splayed windows, is put at about 1120.
